What Is An Electric Hoist?

A lifting device set up above a gantry or beam is called as an electric hoist. The hoist may slide along the rail, and it can be also fixed in one place. The electric motor of the winch is attached to a gear mechanism that rotate a drum. There is a wire around the drum, and it has a hook connected on the free end. There is also a control box that regulates raising and lowering of the load hook by means of a button.

I purchased the electric winch for the race car, I move it into the trailer with the close fit. This winch has been mounted in the front of the trailer, and the power cord has been connected to the small generator. The power is rather enough and it pulls the car without any problems, and it fits the trailer easily. I like the hand-held controller. I got this electric hoist for just $100. Could you imagine? The lifting slings have been added. Well, there are a lot of hoists on Amazon for this price, but I think that the lifting slings are just a great bonus for this awesome hoist. And they can hold 3000 pounds.

The installation did not cause any problems. I used a piece of Unistrut. You have to place it with open end down, there are holes in the back side to connect it to the joist.

The control cable is rather short (5 feet) but I have fixed it. I cut it in the middle and then wire in a piece of 16 gauge and 4 conductor cable. The cable is just 4 wire, 18 gauge. I used 16 gauge, or you can use longer. The cable holds 120 volts, so check whether it can stand this voltage. You can find 16/4 on eBay. So I got a long control cable and now I can use the hoist in my garage. I can also place it in the right position.

This electric wire hoist is great! It lifts a white tail deer right away, that is why I have bought it. The hoist comes with the cable that is hanging down. It does not lop back up to the top. You should take a due care to one thing – if you lift things at different angle, you should watch this angle, and it should not be very extreme. If the angle is extreme, the hoist stops due to the switch. This switch stops the hook preventing it from wounding up to the drum. The cord is five feet. So make sure that your ceiling is not too high because you would need a longer cord. Of course, the cable may be extended.

I bought the automatic electric hoist for my farm and my shop, I raise the hay bales by means of the hoist. The construction of this tool is very solid, and I can happily say that this one is more beneficial than 220/440 lb. capacity (I made some research before buying this one). And this hoist has 440/880 lb capacity.

The general operation is rather smooth, but I can tell that stops and starts are sudden and rough. It has positive brake, it does not let the cable slip. It also has overlimit device, and its construction is not plastic, it is steel. The cord of the operating switch is about 6 feet, it is enough for me, but if you want longer, you should wire it with the help of the conductor.

Be attentive when you lift any load, it should be straight, so that the cable wraps properly. If the cable is often bunched up on one side, and you often lift heavy loads, you may face a rather fast wearing out of the cable. So take this into account.

It has the instructions, and it is rather clear. The operation of the device is smooth and sure. The finish is nice. By the way, the hanger loops fit PL-1000 Unistrut type.

In general, this tool does its job well. It is a very good assistant.

What is the difference between winches and electric hoists?

In fact, their operation is similar, however there are still some significant differences. One of the differences is braking system, it acts in a different way. So you should take it into account while selecting between these tools. Jeeps and also 4×4 vehicles have winches with the dynamic braking system, i.e. the resistance in the gears of the winch is used to hold loads. This version does not work for suspended load, otherwise it may lead to stripped gears, and as a result of it, the load may be dropped.

As to the electric hoist, a mechanical braking system is used, i.e. the suspended payload is fixed in place by means of the physical brake (not hoist gears). It provides a good protection of the lift gears, and the line bleed is also prevented.

A free-spool mechanism is not provided at the electric hoists. And this is another difference between these tools. Winches just require this mechanism, so that the button should not be hold in order to extend the winch line for better spooling out and attaching the cable. Also, winches go without the free-spooling option in order to reduce a risk of the accidental dropping of the load. Some electric hoists are equipped with a switch to cut off the hoist in case of lifting a payload weighing more than it can hold.

Moreover, there are electric winch that could be designed as a hoist. To have this option, the free-spool option should be removed (or disabled), and the brake system should be locked without the gears. Be attentive and always check whether your device have the double duty as a hoist. In other cases, you must not use it because it is dangerous for an operator.

Mounting Options for Electric Hoist

The industrial electric hoists set up with different mounting options, so that it can be used in different ways. Lug mounted, hook suspension, and lug mounted are the most common. The uncommon custom setups may be also found, if it is needed.

In case of the trolley mounted hoists, it is placed on a track, or an i-beam. The hoist is fixed, and so any point is available (along the rail or beam).

The lug mount configuration is used in the electric hoist that is mounted with bolt holes attached to threaded lugs. There are also lug mounts with trolley system.

A suspension hook mount hoists use a hook on top of the unit attached to the mated hook hanging from the ceiling. During the installation, the support for your hoist and loads should be really strong to keep that load. In order to prevent accidents during the use of the device, make sure to use strong mounts, hoists, and supports that are solid.
