Why Paint the Interior of A Garage?
There are houses where you should go through the garage in order to enter the house. And if the garage is not painted, it looks scraggly. However, there is a solution. You may paint the garage walls, and it will be nice and good-looking. And it will be not embarrassing to welcome other people in your house.
Painting is a simple process but you should know some important things before starting this project. The drywall of the garage is usually mudded and taped after building the house. It may have just two thin layers applied over the tape. If you paint this raw garage wall, it will look horrible and not even.
I moved to the house 13 years ago, and I didn’t paint the walls yet. So I decided to fix this and started from “almond”. It is creamy beigey color. There are several colors of eggshell paint and primer: Moth Gray, French Gray Linen, Seriously Sand, and Northern. I took it at Glidden. I applied these colors in two rooms: a play room and a bedroom. I didn’t prepare the walls, I just patched dents and holes. The painting was started when the walls were sanded and smooth. I just used one layer of the paint, and it covered everything well. Some new colors were slightly lighter, but it was not a big deal. I just mixed the colors: linen and moth, two grays. One wall has the linen, and three ones have the moth. I like this design, and it looks awesome, especially when the windows are open and the light makes them look different. Northern landscape and serious sand in the other room. The main color was still beige almond, and I used the colors in alcoves. I also added some highlights, and the final look was amazing! I didn’t expect that one layer would be enough, but it worked well for all these colors. Also, I got a lot of paint left and it is great because I can use them in other rooms. I recommend this paint! I am not that person who constantly leaves reviews, but this paint has really impressed me, and I want to share my experience. I know that reclaimed paints are friendly to the environment. But I used them and the smell was horrible. The regular paints smell like paint, and it was gone in a couple of days. I should say that some walls were covered with just one layer. So the coverage is rather good. I painted the room for the baby teal and gray. But we got to know that we would have a girl, so we decided to repaint the room into the pink. And you know, two layers were enough! If you found this paint, and you still think whether to take it or not, I just recommend you to try it. The quality is just the same as in the brand names, it provides a great coverage, and the price is affordable. I read bad reviews about this paint, and they said that they got a damaged product. Well, you should contact your seller. I also got one can that was slightly damaged, and I contacted the seller, and they just replaced it with a new one. Not problems at all. I also got a little gift from them. So, if you do not want waste your money, you should buy this paint! It is worth it. And you will have a really nice and fresh walls! Consider the temperature in your region. Weather is very important during choosing a paint and to keep the painting wall nice and neat. Painting in winter may not be a good idea. It is better to paint during warm weather. Preparation is very important. It helps to make the whole process easier. You should move all furniture in the garage, and you may cover it to protect against the spots from the paint. Switch covers and electrical outlets should be moved. Of course, all your vehicles should be outside the garage. If there are any holes in the wall, they must be repaired. Use vinyl spackling. Use a damp cloth to remove the excess spackling. Use the tape for masking the light switches and electrical outlets. Doors and windows may be also covered. Just use the tape on any thing you do not want to be dirty with the paint. All garage walls should be well cleaned before painting. Sometimes walls and also ceilings may be dirty after building. You may even notice some oil stains, and dust, and other spots that make the wall ugly. Just use a broom to clean the walls. When most dirty is cleaned, the walls should be washed. It is better to use soap. Do not use any chemicals or other harsh ingredients. The main task is to clean the surface and remove the oil and other sticky things on the walls. And do not use too much soap, otherwise you will just damage the wall, and will have to repair it again. Then let the walls dry. Of course, if you see that the garage walls are not very dirty and are not oily or sticky, you may skip this process. I don’t have close shops with hardware and things for repair, so I went to Amazon and bought this product. I took two gallons in Suede for painting the bedroom. It was my first experience because I didn’t paint anything in my life. And it was also my first order online, so I was a little bit worry about the package I would receive. So I got the package and just painted the room. The cans were well packed and I didn’t have any damages on them (I read other reviews and they said about some damages). There was the bubble wrapping and so it was in a good condition. The paint provided a great coverage, it dried quickly. We could not wait for long till it would dry completely. All walls were covered smoothly. I think that I have ordered too much, or maybe the paint consumption is good. But it is good that some paint is left because I will use it for another room. The only thing that I don’t like is that it is rather difficult to guess the color. When I got the paint, it slightly differed from the color online, it was darker. But I like it anyway. So you should take this issue into account when you order the paint online. I can tell for sure that I will order the paint online again next time. I painted the porch in 2006, I used two colors – Permawhite exterior, and also green Sherwin Williams paint. It was the best. But now I want to paint it again because the green color is peeled over, and Permawhite has some cracks. So I can say that the exterior and interior paints are durable. But the manufacturer should add some colors. They suggest to tint the colors, but it is easy to get lighter pastels, and then you will not be able to find the exact math to the paint. It depends on a condition of the surface. A thin layer of PVA (poly vinyl acetate) primer should be applied to the drywall if it is unpainted and new. This way, you will seal the drywall surface for better durability and having an even layer of the paint. If you paint the new drywall garage walls, the surface will absorb the paint right away, and then you will have not very pleasing result. You should then make it over again. The primes allows paint dry smoothly and evenly, and so the wall will have a better look. It happens that the garage walls already have a layer of the latex paint. In this case, priming is not needed, unless you have some stains through the paint. To have a better result, an oil-based primer sealer will do the work. Due to this, you well remove the stains. Make sure that you use the oil-based type of the primer. You may use such products as Preprite Problock, Kilz, or Cover Stain. So you may consider these options. If the garage walls have already the oil-based paint, you should sand and also prime the surface using a bonding primer, and acrylic primer. Make sure that the paint is not latex because it does not bond to the glossy finish of that oily-based paint. If you do it, you will fail in painting the garage walls, or the result will be different than you expect. Sanding will dull the surface, and so the paint will stick well. Of course, you can always just paint the wall with the oil-based paint and avoid the prep process. Here are some good bonding primer for the oil-based paint: KILZ MAX Maximum Stain and Odor Blocking Interior Latex Primer/Sealer; If you plan to have a light color on your garage walls but they are now dark, you may need to have several layers without primer. We would recommend you to use Wood Primer and Sherwin Williams Premium Walls. These primers are rather thick and will cover the dark color well. Interior latex paints would be the best option for the interior walls. We do not recommend the exterior paints. The exterior paints are meant for rain, sunlight, or snow, and as your garage walls are placed inside, they do not need such protection. The only issue you should take into account is freezing in winter. But these paints are just fine with these issues. Also, the exterior paints may be toxic and have strong smell. It may also contain some chemicals, such as anti-mildew additives, and they may induce some health issues. So you should follow the instructions while using any paints. And use the exterior paints just for the external surfaces. Good paints are as follows: Sherwin Williams Duration Home Matte; You want to use flat paint, it is not a good idea for the garage wall. Its finish may be dull, and the cleaning is not convenient. And if the wall is dirty, and you rub it, it will just make worse. Satin, matte, eggshell, and semi-gloss are considered the best finishes. Sating is well cleaned, and makes the surface look smooth without any extra shining effect. The airless sprayer is a very good and fast tool to paint the walls and also ceiling. You may use the same color for these purposes. In this case, you should prepare the space, and clear it in front of the walls and cover it with the plastic. If you do not have this equipment, there is always an opportunity to rent a sprayer from a paint store. Make sure that outlets, windows, and floor are covered with plastic and tape before painting the walls. When you finish the painting, the paint should be rolled. To do it, a 9-inch roller may be used. Apply two layers of paint for smooth finish and a long-lasting effect. This paint differs from the low VOC primer. I can surely say that this product is very thick. Its composition is like cheap primer and drywall. I may compare it to peanut butter. It has good and bad sides. The bad side is that you have to really clear the surface, otherwise the paint will not stick to it. You will not be able to mix with other primers due to its different consistency. And if you try to mix it, you would fail. The advantage of the paint is a good coverage, if you work with clean and well-prepared surface, the coating will be smooth and neat. Of course, darker colors will be more intensive, but you can also use light shades. When it dries out, you can easily clean the surface, and this paint is also stain resistant. One more thing you should know is the color naming. I find it very confusing. When I searched the paint, I found the word eggshell, so I thought that it should be off-white. But I was wrong. The color was more beige than any eggshell I’ve ever seen. So, if you are going to buy any paint online, you should be more attentive and read the description, otherwise you would order the color you do not want. I got this matte clear protection and I really liked it. Due to this product, I refinished all furniture. I know that this process may be time-consuming because I used to refinish professionally. It does not look to wax. But I must say that wax takes more efforts and does not protect the furniture. And if you put hot tea on the surface, the wax is damaged. So the satin polycrylic is just perfect, shiny, and gives a matte finish. I read in some review that there were some yellow streaks. Well, this person applied the product thickly. This is paint, so do not use thick coats, or it may go down. I found out that it may happen with slightly yellow white paint. So I do not recommend to apply it on a tabletop getting lot of wear and tear. I used it for a china cabinet, and it worked well. I will follow how this coat will work in several months and let you know.Glidden -Best paint for garage walls
